I was given a “dead” ipod mini by a friend of mine for doing work on her computer…
She said the battery “didn’t work too well” and, like me, she wasn’t working at the time, so I accepted, knowing full well that I had a project on my hands :)

Doing a little google research shows that these are fairly easy to get apart and replace bits like the battery, wheel, microdrive, etc, with huge bonus!
The microdrive in these is fully, 100% compatible with compact flash memory cards! I ran to my local Micro Center, and picked up a little 8 gig to test with, along with a shiny new battery, and set about my task of rebuilding… plugged into itunes, and it was detected, formatted, and ready to roll, with no moving parts, twice the storage, and a great battery! If you can come across one of these with a bad drive or weak battery on the cheap, pick it up, do your research on the google, and have a blast with your modified mini!

Mp3 player To home stereo ?
I purchased a RCA stereo is has a usb port, which is compatibal with mp3 and windows media files. A few months later I purchased a RCA Opal, I put songs on it using Yahoo Music Jukebox. The problem is when Jukebox Model Jel I plug into the usb port it doesn’t read the player or it reads it and doesn’t play. I don’t think it is a problem with the stereo because you can hook an I-pod to it and it works fine.Heres a link to the player specs;http://www.rcaaudiovideo.com/product.asp…Heres a link to the stereo system specs:http://www.rcaaudiovideo.com/product.asp…note: I have last years model but it is essentially the same system only difference is is the wattage mine is 400

There is no doubt that this is a beautiful piece of workmanship. I have an Apple-obsessed friend that I have teased for years about his Apple fixation. So when I bought this secondhand beauty I emailed him my impression:

“Build quality and packaging are exceptional, truly first rate. Excellent tactility. Apple really has that part sorted out; I’m impressed.
Screen and CPU somewhat less magnificent.”

Part of my teasing of this pleasant fellow was due to my experience with iTunes; I had given in to his constant evangelism about my trying it out. iTunes represented, for me, all that is wrong with software. Unjustifiably massive bloat, braindead 70MB updates, resource hogging, and treating the user like he has been lobotomized (or hypnotized by Apple). So no iTunes for me, no matter what. The solution?

“The OS is so-so and iTunes is the Root Of All Evil, so I installed
rockbox on it and am enjoying it immensely. I load
mp3/ogg/flac/whatever by copying across the USB connection.
    (rockbox dot org)”

Rockbox lets me use that beautiful Apple hardware with an interface that puts /me/ in control. And I can play ogg, flac, Still, I find myself using the iPod less than a Sansa e260 that had an MSRP 3-4x less than the iPod. The Sansa has a color screen, better video playback (yes, you can play video on your mini with rockbox. It also has something that might seem trivial: a place to attach a lanyard.

Since I use the Sansa for mobile listening I might get one of those audio docks to use the iPod with my stereo system.

The product that was sent looked wonderful, however it does not work. The iPod will not hold a charge. My mistake was not to notice there was not a return policy for this vender. Now I have a $70.00 lemon. This does not reflect against Amazon, but the individual vendor.

I’m catching up on all my amazon reviews. Sorry this won’t help much because the technology has moved way on. This was my first mp3 player and it worked well. After a couple of years the battery would not hold a charge and it was regulated to a car mp3 player that stayed plugged it to the DC lighter jack in the car. I haven’t used it in months but, I think as longs as its plugged in it will play.

i bought my ipod mini about 2 yrs ago used when i got it the battery was basicly usless ei 10 mins or less on a full charge… i dont use my ipod that much but when i do use it the battery drains way to fast… for the money i payed thats to be expected i guess… i payed around $40 with shipping… i mainly use my ipod when my sansa is out of battery or misplaced somewhere in my messy room… i would like to get a replacement battery.. so far my ipod works fine on windows 7 which is a good sign considering how old the ipod is…

overall i would recommend the ipod mini to anyone…..

    pros
    great size
    color
    sound
    click wheel

    cons
battery life – a major issue
    no video
battery drains after about 10 or so mins of continued use (on high volume about 5 mins)
