I found a new 20gb DJ last year at a local computer store, discontinued, for 59. At the time I needed a lot of storage to take tons of cds on a trip, and the next cheapest big capacity mp3 player offered 8gb for 80. I researched online and found two issues with the DJ, both of which I thought I could deal with. I was right, they were not a big problem, and I’m happy to have bought this. Here’s what I did. [To all DJ owners: please read this whole review, there are a few tips that will keep your player alive and well!]The first thing is, as with any player, to have all your mp3 files backed up ahead of time. This unit, like all, can fail and go dead (though it hasn’t yet on me). So have the files stored somewhere on your hd or on a few data dvds just in case. You will have to, in fact, in order to update the firmware on this unit. This unit can, contrary to reports here and elsewhere, run on Vista (and, I’m guessing, Windows 7). But it must be updated on an XP machine first.

can I run a USB extrenal HDD with my home stereo’s USB port?
I bought a home stereo system a few days ago & it has a USB port & a USB source option and can play MP3’s. I want to run a USB Jukebox Digital mp3 external HDD through the port to play MP3’s like a digital jukebox so I do not have to change out cd’s.Can I & how would I go about doing this if possible? It is an RCA RS2056. The user manual under technical specifications says:”Maximum size of mass Storage Class device supported: 20 GB”Would a 20GB USB extrenal HDD work or is there a 20GB usb Flash drive even available?

This is the third Zen I’ve bought for my family. We all love them. Easy to use, more features than an iPod and a heck of a lot cheaper. I’m very happy with the product.

I bought this a while back as a test purchase for the Zen Mosaic product line. I didn’t want to foot the bill for a higher-capacity product like the 16GB until I tried this one. Over-all, it has been an excellent purchase. The display shows the full title and album cover of the music, and it has relatively easy menu navigation. I have used this strictly for music, not pictures or video. Sound output is very strong. It’s almost too strong for headphones, being only safe for the lowest two settings. The device comes with a warning about not playing it too loud, and it’s absolutely right. On the other hand, using a line-in connection in the car, or, as I have it connected to a 2.1 speaker system right now, it provides a wonderful output, clear and strong. The lithium battery means not having to buy AAA batteries all of the time. It isn’t replaceable, but that doesn’t bother me. I’ve had this device for a while, now, and it’s still running quite well.

The headphones…well, check your ears after you use them, or you might embarass yourself when someone tells you that you’ve got little black sponges stuck in your ears. I prefer to use different headphones than the ones that came with it.

Regarding the software that came with it: I was not able to install it on my computer because I do not have higher than Windows XP without the Service Pack. I have tried to install SP2 about four times already, and it makes my computer crash every time, so this software is a no-go for me. When I try to install it, I get a message telling me to upgrade my operating system. Yeah, I’m going to upgrade my entire operating system for the sake of some bloatware…or, maybe not. I haven’t found another way to import a playlist from my computer, though Windows Media Player does sync the device quite well, otherwise.

Before buying this product, I strongly advise comparing the prices of the different MP3 player capacities of the Zen Mozaic product line. Right now, the 16GB is the best deal, and I’m going to add it to my cart just as soon as I finish typing this.

As soon as I received, I charged the unit. I saw the menu display while charging so everything seemed fine. Then after fully charging (instructions say at least 3 hours), I unplugged the USB cable and clicked the power on button. Nothing happened. I repeatedly clicked it and nothing. No display light or anything. I then plugged the USB cable back in to see if it would do anything while connected to computer. Nothing. The unit was dead.

I am attempting to send it back now for a refund. Amazon’s return service is down. I’ve tried the web page and to reach them by email and by phone. All three methods have given me an error saying Amazon return service and customer service was down. You’d think the email would at least have been sent.

Ugh! Now I dislike the unit and Amazon.

Overall I’m satisfied with it. I still don’t know how to make a playlist. But I know how to play my songs. I haven’t figured out how to make the mp3 player connect with the iriver software the player comes with. This provides a level of frustration for me, since I thought I would be able to organize my songs extensively. But I was the “informed consumer ” so any dissatisfaction is my fault. For the most part I like it. Now would I recommend it? I don’t know.
But its still simple enough understand how to preform its functions. I just have that one problem with trying to organize my music. It could just be me, but in end I am satisfied with my mp3 player.

    Pros:
sound and Video are pretty good.

    Cons:
Navigation is clumsy, Laborious and loses it’s position in the folder structure
    when you use radio.
Video loses its space if you stop and power off. (Although you can add a bookmark)
Froze up on me twice (but rarely)
    —-
It’s almost like creators couldn’t be bothered about efficient usability. They
were lazy and gave it little thought.
This is my third Iriver and this one has lost it for me. I bought a Sony instead.

I gave it 3 stars because as much as i HATE this player, its core operation
is OK (Sound and Video) and some beople might not be worried too much about its bad
    navigation. It’s just my opinion.

I use it to record audio for my church with the line-in feature. After the service I download everything to my computer and edit the recording before putting on a CD or our web site. I should have gotten the 8 gig, becuase I have so many recordings still on here to share with people.
The voice recording isn’t the best-most of mine have been distorted, so I don’t even use that anymore. Otherwise, it is a great product.

Some might argue those two qualities are the same. The player mounts in Linux when you set it up as an MSC device and you can drag and drop music. The biggest deal is that as of version 0.12.8 Rhythmbox can write playlists for the e100 that you can access from the e100. That’s important because once you have a few gb of music on there it’s a laborious process to move from song to song.

Updating the firmware is a bit of a hassle in Linux but it’s possible … for now.

Yeah the toilet. The player rates 5 stars for portability but now I would recommend an arm band. It slipped out of a back pocket and right into the toilet while it was on and playing out of its little speaker. It actually kept playing underwater for a few seconds, then something gave, bubbles started coming up and the music stopped. I fished it out after about 20 seconds. It kept making this pathetic choking sound out of the speaker. Attempts to turn it off failed. I dried it and wrapped it in toilet paper and figured that was its death shroud. It sat in there choking and sputtering for a day. Every time I tried to turn it off and put it out of its misery it just kept coughing. Eventually all was quiet. A few days later on a whim I turned it on, and it lived! I plugged it in, charged it up and it sounds just as good as it did. Oh yeah I cleaned it up too.

I’d give it 5 stars if the firmware update was easier and it was easier to navigate.

I haven’t tried video on it but jpgs are nice.
